79 Happy Days: EDITING

JUNE 19, 2014

Since I didn’t end up posting this yesterday and I finished editing the story today, here it is! My happy days moment… EDITING!

There are many things that bother me about my profession. Too much crime. Too much sensationalizing. But fundamentally, I truly love what I do. Still, after twenty years in the business, the process excites me. I love the challenge of figuring out how to visually tell a story, and then editing those images with the reporter’s words and the voices of the people. I get a little thrill watching the result. I cut two pieces today: The Feel Good Piece, and our daily news story on a company charging fees to find apartments, and not following through. On days like today I’m reminded of the importance behind journalism, the necessity of a watchdog eye. The woman we interviewed thanked us for warning other people so perhaps they wont get scammed. And the feel good story. The final cut piece made both the reporter and me cry.

During the weeks when it seems like all I’m covering is the nastiness of the world, I need to remember all of the good stories I’ve been a part of over the years, and appreciate the fact that I’m one of the lucky ones who gets to spend every day doing what I love: taking pictures and telling stories.

Bright and early we head to Winslow for our anniversary weekend! So excited. By the way, if you noticed my happy days logo looked off…. it is. I accidentally trashed the file and had to quickly recreate. Its’ not as good. I’ll have to work on that more tomorrow.

Until then…

Later gators!
